The Province has a population in excess of 464 000 people. For the most part, the population is occupied by agriculture or animal husbandry. The majority of the crops cultivated are cereals, including pearl millet, millet, corn and sorghum. Animal husbandry is based on cattle, donkeys, mutton, goat and poultry.

The peoples of the Province belong largely to the Mossi and Peulh ethnicities and practice Christianity, Islam, or Animism. The population suffers from many problems, including the irregularity of rainfall, poor hygienic conditions and a lack of basic literacy and technical training.
